Why are there so many mosquitoes around garden villas and riverside homes?
Because they have plenty of shade for mosquitoes to rest in and plenty of standing water for them to breed in. Neighbourhoods such as Thao Dien, Sala, Thu Thiem, Phu My Hung and Nha Be have a great deal of greenery, landscape ponds, canals and embankments. Dense foliage and shady garden corners are where adult mosquitoes rest during the day, and water standing on the property is where they lay their eggs. The more plant pots, water features and garden ornaments a house has, the more places water can sit after rain.
Mosquitoes also fly in from beyond the boundary, so for a riverside home one spraying lowers numbers only for a period. Longer-lasting results come from combining spraying with regular removal of standing water.
Does mosquito spraying protect against dengue?
Spraying lowers the number of adult mosquitoes for a time, and it does not replace the measures the health authorities put first. According to Vietnam's Ministry of Health and the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, dengue is spread by the striped Aedes mosquito. It lays its eggs in fairly clean water standing in containers around the home and usually bites during the day, most noticeably in the early morning and late afternoon. The health sector's message is “no larvae, no dengue”: the key measure is removing the places where mosquitoes breed.
The standard advice is to keep water containers covered, change the water in flower vases regularly, turn over or throw away anything that can hold water, sleep under a net even during the day, and cooperate when the local authority sprays an outbreak area. A home spraying service does not replace the measures carried out by the health authorities. If someone at home has a high fever, take them to a medical facility to be examined instead of treating it yourself.
Where does standing water collect around a house?
The usual places are listed below. Before spraying, your Up specialist walks the property with you and deals with every point that can be reached safely. Points on a high roof, or in upper-floor gutters with no walkway or guard rail, are recorded for a separate survey.
- Garden
- Plant saucers, empty pots, tree hollows, leaf sheaths that hold water, coconut shells, tarpaulins and outdoor toys.
- Water features
- Decorative jars and urns, bowls of aquatic plants, landscape ponds with little flow, fountains left switched off for a long time.
- Services
- Drain pits, blocked drainage channels, aircon drip trays, water tanks with a missing or loose lid.
- Roof and terrace
- Gutters blocked with leaves, puddles on the roof terrace, plant pots on balconies.
- Swimming pool
- A pool that is out of use, or a pool cover holding rainwater. For a full clean, UpClean also offers pool cleaning and water tank cleaning.
How is mosquito spraying done, and which products are used?
UpClean's technicians choose the method after seeing the grounds, how many mosquitoes there are and whether the household includes young children, pets or a fish pond. Products come only from those permitted and validly registered in Vietnam and are used as the label directs. No brand is named on this page, because the choice depends on the method, the grounds and who lives in the home. The product, the areas to be treated and the re-entry time, meaning how long to keep away from a treated area, are written into the plan you receive before the visit.
If you would prefer a biological or lower-chemical approach, say so at the survey. The technicians consider it within the permitted list, together with clearing standing water, the chemical-free measure the health sector puts first. The main approaches are these:
- Space spraying
- A fine mist that spreads through the air and quickly lowers the number of adult mosquitoes at the time of spraying. The effect is short, so it is typically used before an outdoor event or when numbers are very high. Keep away from the area for the time advised.
- Treating resting places
- The undersides of leaves, low shrubs, shady porch corners and the space under outdoor stairs, where mosquitoes shelter by day. It lasts longer than space spraying, and the area is clearly marked out to avoid play areas and vegetables.
- Water that cannot be removed
- For drain pits and landscape ponds the technicians decide case by case. If a pond holds fish, tell us in advance so that nothing is applied directly to the water.
- Clearing standing water
- Carried out by your Up specialist, and something the household can keep up every week. It is the basis for every other method.
How do I get rid of mosquitoes inside the house and bedroom?
Start with the water and the gaps, before any spraying. Most mosquitoes indoors fly in from the garden or balcony, or hatch from standing water inside the home that nobody notices. Check:
- Flower vases, bowls of aquatic plants, the drip tray under the fridge, the aircon drip tray, and buckets and basins in bathrooms.
- Whether the insect screens on windows and balcony doors are intact or torn, and any gap around aircon pipes where they pass through the wall.
- Dark, damp spots behind curtains, under beds and in wardrobes, where mosquitoes rest by day.
- Insect lamps, electric rackets and bed nets help in a bedroom. They do not replace removing the places where mosquitoes breed.
- If mosquitoes are still numerous once the inside of the home is dry, the source is usually in the grounds, and the survey will identify the outdoor areas to treat.
Is mosquito spraying safe for children, pets and fish ponds?
The plan is drawn up around the people, pets and ponds in your home, and it states how long to keep away from the treated area. Outdoor treatment usually means keeping doors closed, staying indoors and avoiding the garden for that time. Preparation is as follows:
- Tell us at the survey about young children, older people and anyone with a respiratory condition, and about dogs, cats, caged birds, fish ponds and any beehive in the garden.
- Close windows and doors facing the garden during spraying. Bring in laundry, toys and pet bowls.
- Cover fish ponds, bowls of aquatic plants and domestic water tanks as the technicians direct.
- Do not pick vegetables or fruit from the garden for the period advised after spraying.
- The household and pets return to the outdoor area only when the re-entry time in the plan has passed.
- Your Up specialist then wipes outdoor tables and chairs and the children's play area before handing the garden back.
How often should mosquito spraying be done?
One spraying before an event can be enough for a short-term purpose; keeping numbers down through the rainy season usually takes a repeat schedule, particularly for a riverside garden home. The rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City usually runs from about May to November, which is also when the health sector advises stepping up dengue prevention.
UpClean proposes the interval between visits from the method and the level of mosquito activity, and states it in the quote. Between visits, emptying standing water every week matters as much as the spraying itself.
Should I spray for mosquitoes myself or book a service?
A household aerosol is suitable for immediate relief in one room or a porch corner. Choose a product with a valid registration number in Vietnam, follow the label, keep the room closed for the time stated on the packaging and then ventilate it. Never spray towards people, food or a fish tank, and do not use several products together.
In large grounds with layers of planting and water features, spraying yourself tends to miss the places mosquitoes rest while over-applying where it is not needed. A survey identifies the areas that need treatment, selects a method suited to a garden used by children and pets, and leaves you with a list of standing-water points to keep an eye on.
- Doing it yourself is reasonable when
- Mosquitoes appear only indoors, the area is small, and you are not yet seeing many larvae in water containers around the house.
- A service is the better choice when
- The garden is large or close to a river or canal; mosquitoes are numerous all day; you are preparing for an outdoor party; or the house has stood empty for a long time before your return.
How much does mosquito control cost?
UpClean does not publish a rate for mosquito control. After a free survey you receive an all-inclusive quote in writing that states the area to be treated, the method, the re-entry time and the repeat schedule. The price depends on:
- The size of the garden and the number of floors, porches and roof terraces to be treated.
- How densely it is planted, and the number of landscape ponds, drain pits and water features.
- The method chosen and the number of repeat visits during the rainy season.
- The amount of standing-water clearance, covering and wiping down carried out by your Up specialist.
- Location. Surveys are arranged regularly in An Khanh ward (Sala, Thu Thiem, Thao Dien), Binh Trung, Cat Lai, Phu My Hung (Tan My and Tan Hung wards), Thanh My Tay (Binh Thanh), former Districts 1, 3 and 4, former Phu Nhuan and Nha Be commune. For Districts 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12, Go Vap, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and former District 9, please call first; the date is confirmed when you book. The city replaced its districts with wards in July 2025, but people still use the district names, so we do too.
