What do bed bugs look like, and what are the signs?
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes bed bugs as small, flat insects without wings, reddish brown and about 1 to 7 mm long, that feed on people's blood while they sleep and can live for several months without a meal. The CDC also says bed bugs are not known to spread disease to people, though they cause itching, lost sleep and sometimes allergic reactions. Bite marks can take up to two weeks to show, so many people cannot tell which night they were bitten.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists the signs to look for when you change the sheets or clean a bedroom:
- Rusty or reddish stains on sheets and mattresses, left by bed bugs that have been crushed.
- Dark spots about the size of a full stop. These are droppings, and they bleed into fabric the way a marker pen does.
- Shed skins and pale yellow eggs, each about 1 mm.
- Live bed bugs in mattress seams, piping and labels, in the cracks of bed frames and headboards, in the folds of sofa cushions, in drawer joints, in electrical sockets and behind pictures on the wall.
Fleas on cats and dogs: why is treating the pet not enough?
Because fleas live on the animal but most of their life cycle takes place around the house. According to Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, flea larvae feed on the droppings of adult fleas and indoors are usually found under furniture and in pet bedding. It also advises throwing away the vacuum-cleaner bag at least once a week, because fleas can go on developing inside it. The CDC notes that fleas find a host by warmth, movement and breath; they prefer animals but will bite people when no other host is available.
An effective flea plan therefore has three parts running side by side. The pet is examined by a vet, who prescribes its treatment. UpClean's technicians treat the places in the home where larvae hide. Carpets, sofas and pet beds are vacuumed and cleaned thoroughly. UpClean does not treat the animal itself.
How do treatment and cleaning work together?
Treatment deals with the hiding places; cleaning is the accompanying work that lets it take effect. The EPA stresses that bed bug control needs several measures combined, non-chemical and chemical, and that the outcome depends on the extent of the infestation, the amount of clutter and the participation of the people living there. UpClean therefore does not present cleaning as a way of killing bed bugs.
- UpClean's technicians
- Confirm whether it is bed bugs or fleas and how far they have spread; plan the treatment of beds, cracks and furniture with products that are permitted and validly registered in Vietnam; tell you how long to stay out of the room; and return for the follow-up checks committed to in the quote.
- Your Up specialist
- Surveys; bags textiles; protects surfaces; watches each treated point; vacuums mattress seams, bed frames, sofas and carpets in detail; cleans mattresses, sofas and bedding at the point the plan calls for; and prepares the Up Report, the photo record sent after each visit.
- You
- Wash and dry the bagged textiles as instructed, take pets to the vet if there are fleas, and keep the rooms tidy so that the follow-up check goes smoothly.
What happens to the mattress, sofa and bedding?
They are vacuumed, bagged, washed or cleaned in the order the treatment plan sets: some items before treatment, to expose the hiding places, and others only after the time to stay out of the room has passed. Textiles are where bed bugs and flea larvae hide most, and your Up specialist follows the procedures of our mattress, sofa and bedding cleaning services.
- Seams, piping, mattress labels and sofa folds are vacuumed with a narrow nozzle. As the EPA recommends, the bag is sealed and put in an outdoor bin straight after each pass.
- Sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, curtains and soft toys are sealed in bags on the spot and taken straight to the washing machine and dryer. The EPA names a dryer on high heat as one way to kill bed bugs on fabric.
- Pillow and duvet inners are steam-treated where the care label allows, following our bedding laundry procedure.
- Mattresses and fabric sofas are cleaned by spray extraction. Leather sofas are cleaned in the way the material requires.
- You may wish to consider a zipped mattress encasement. The EPA states that bed bugs trapped inside cannot get out to feed.
Is bed bug and flea treatment safe for children and pets?
Before the visit you receive a written note naming the rooms to be treated, how long to stay out of them and what to prepare. Only products that are permitted and validly registered in Vietnam are used. Young children and pets leave the treated rooms for the time stated in the note, and toys and pet bowls are shut away beforehand; the technicians' instructions apply throughout. Cleaning of the items scheduled for after treatment starts only once that time has passed.
Bed bugs in serviced apartments, short-term rentals and homes of frequent travellers
The CDC says bed bugs spread mainly in luggage, overnight bags, clothing and furniture, and that most are carried unknowingly by travellers. That is a standing risk for an apartment with a steady turnover of guests, and for international families who travel for work or go home for the holidays.
- Owners receive the survey, quote and Up Report privately, and visits are fitted between guest stays where possible.
- After a trip, unpack on a hard floor away from the bed, check the seams of the suitcase, and wash and dry your clothes straight away.
- Book detailed vacuuming and mattress cleaning at regular intervals between lets, so that anything unusual is noticed early.
What should I do, and not do, if I think I have bed bugs or fleas?
These are the safe steps to take while you wait for the survey, and a few habits to avoid:
- Do
- Take photos, and keep any insect you catch in a sealed bag or under sticky tape. Wash bedding and dry it hot as the care label allows. Vacuum and seal the bag. Reduce the clutter around the bed. Take dogs and cats to the vet.
- Do not
- Move to sleep in another room, or carry the mattress elsewhere before it has been wrapped, because this spreads bed bugs further. Do not mix chemicals yourself or spray products of unknown origin on beds or where children play. Do not use a product made for dogs on a cat.
- When to call a professional
- The signs are still there after a few weeks of your own efforts, they appear in several rooms, or a rental apartment has to be dealt with between two guest stays. The EPA cautions that do-it-yourself heat treatment at home may not be effective.
How much does bed bug or flea treatment cost?
UpClean does not list a price for this service. After a free survey you receive one all-inclusive quote in writing, stating the rooms to be treated, the items to be cleaned, the number of follow-up checks and the warranty terms. The cost depends on:
- The number of bedrooms and beds, and how far the bed bugs or fleas have spread.
- The number and size of mattresses, sofas, carpets and bedding sets to be cleaned.
- The number of treatment and follow-up visits in the plan.
- Clutter: piles of belongings add to the bagging and vacuuming.
- Particular hours, such as the gap between two guest stays.
Which areas of Ho Chi Minh City do you cover?
UpClean arranges surveys regularly in An Khanh ward (Thao Dien, Sala, Thu Thiem), Binh Trung, Cat Lai, Phu My Hung, Thanh My Tay, Nha Be commune and the wards of former Districts 1, 3 and 4 and former Phu Nhuan, areas with many serviced apartments and international families. The city replaced its districts with wards in July 2025, but people still use the district names, so we do too. For Districts 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12, Go Vap, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and former District 9, call or message 0773 521 104 on WhatsApp or Zalo; the date is confirmed when you book.
- Pest control in Ho Chi Minh City
- Cockroaches, ants or rodents in the same home can go into the same survey and one quote.
