Pruning, crown reduction or felling: which does my tree need?
A tree that is in the way does not always have to come down. Thinning or reducing the crown often solves the problem and keeps the shade and the look of the tree. Felling is the last resort, for a tree that is dead, hollow with decay or leaning dangerously, or where a planned renovation needs the ground cleared.
Every cut is a wound to the tree. The Up specialist, a member of UpClean's identity-verified and trained staff, therefore asks what you want to achieve before any tool is picked up, and proposes only as much cutting as that purpose requires.
| Option | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Crown thinning | Some of the branches inside the crown are removed; shape and height stay the same. For a healthy tree that has grown too dense. |
| Crown reduction | Branches that reach too high or too far are shortened back to suitable side branches. For a tree that has outgrown the garden. |
| Removing single branches | Only the branches that touch a roof, a washing line or a wall, or block a light, are dealt with. The rest of the tree is left as it is. |
| Felling | The tree is sawn in sections from the top down, each piece lowered on ropes when there are houses, cars or fences around. A whole trunk is dropped only where the open space is wide and safe enough. |
What is tree pruning for?
Pruning is done for shape, for safety before the storm season, for light, to clear buildings or for the health of the tree. Done to the right degree and in the right place, it leaves a tree more open and healthier; cutting too hard, or cutting the trunk off short, can weaken it.
| Purpose | What is done |
|---|---|
| Shape | Ornamental trees, shrubs and hedges are cut to keep their form and height and to sit well with the architecture of the house. |
| Safety before the storm season | Dead, broken and weak crossing branches are removed, and the crown is thinned so that it catches less wind and is less likely to break or fall. |
| Light and air | A thinner crown lets sunlight reach the lawn and flower beds. The garden is less damp, with less moss and fewer mosquitoes. |
| Clearing buildings | Branches touching the roof, gutters, windows, boundary walls, lights or cameras are cut back, which also means fewer fallen leaves blocking the gutters. |
| Tree health | Diseased and dead branches are taken out to limit spread and let the tree put its strength into the healthy part of the crown. |
Do I need permission to cut down a tree in Ho Chi Minh City?
It depends on where the tree stands. A tree inside your own property is yours to decide on. In a residential compound or a building with a management office, felling usually needs the management's agreement as well, and so does felling a tree in the shared grounds.
A tree on the pavement, on a road divider, in a park or on other public land is an urban tree. Felling it, moving it or pruning it heavily requires permission from the competent authority and is carried out by the organisation assigned to manage it. UpClean works only on trees inside the client's property. If the tree in front of your house is dangerous, the specialist can help you prepare photos and a description to send with a request to the local authority.
Near power lines, we do not cut branches that touch the cables or lie close to them. We explain how to contact the electricity company, which either switches off the power or deals with the branches inside the safety corridor of the line. The rest of the tree is done once the site is safe.
How is tree work kept safe on site?
No work starts before the tree and the site have been assessed: height, trunk diameter, lean, dead wood and decay, and the distance to power lines, roofs and boundary walls. On the day the area below is cordoned off, and roofs, glass and garden furniture are covered. The specialists work from a stable ladder with safety lines, helmet, goggles and gloves, and lower each cut section on a rope, while one person stays on the ground to coordinate and keep everyone out of the danger zone.
A tree that is too tall, a position with nowhere safe to stand a ladder, or a job that needs a specialised lifting platform is declared plainly at the survey; we do not accept work we cannot do safely. The work is usually not done on the day of the survey. The quote and the safety plan come first, then a date is set to suit the equipment required and the working hours your compound or building allows.
How much does tree pruning or tree removal cost?
There is no price per tree, because the labour and the risk vary too much from one tree to the next. The on-site survey is free and the all-inclusive price is sent in writing. For a low tree in an accessible position you can send a photo of the whole tree, one of the base and one of the surroundings by WhatsApp or Zalo on 0773 521 104 for an initial estimate; a tall tree or one close to a building needs the on-site survey. The scope and the handling of debris are fixed in the quote and change only with your written agreement.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Height and size | Height, trunk diameter and crown spread decide the equipment, the number of people and the time. |
| Access | A tree in the middle of a wide garden is different from one against the house, in a narrow lane or on a roof terrace. The route for carrying branches and timber out counts too. |
| Power lines and structures | Near cables, a glass roof, a swimming pool or parked cars, the tree has to come down piece by piece on ropes, which takes longer. |
| How much is cut | Light pruning, crown reduction or felling, with or without work on the stump. |
| Volume of debris | The quantity of branches and timber to cut up and take away, and whether you keep the wood. |
| Working hours | The hours your compound or building allows, and whether the job fits one session or several. |
What happens to the stump, the timber and the tree afterwards?
After felling, the stump is normally cut close to the ground. Depending on its position and your plans for the area, you can keep a low stump, have the shallow part dug out, or leave it to be dealt with in a later garden renovation. The roots of a large tree can spread under paving, pipes and the foundations of a boundary wall, so digging out a stump is proposed only after the underground structures around it have been considered. The method is written into the quote from the start.
Branches and leaves are collected, the trunk is cut into lengths and the garden is swept before handover; the quote states how the green waste leaves the property. If you want to keep the trunk or particular branches, say so beforehand. The specialist cuts them to a convenient size and stacks them where you indicate.
On a tree that has been pruned, each cut is made close to the branch collar and left clean, with no long stub and no torn bark, which helps the tree close the wound. For the first few weeks, keep watering on hot days and watch for unusually dense shoots around the cuts; weak, crowded shoots can be thinned at the next maintenance visit. The Up Report, sent by WhatsApp or Zalo after the work, shows before-and-after photos and notes on the condition of the tree.
When should trees be pruned in Ho Chi Minh City?
In Ho Chi Minh City the sensible time to check large trees is before the rainy and storm season begins, while dead and weak branches are still easy to see and the ground is not yet saturated. Ornamental trees and hedges can be trimmed for shape all year round; hard reshaping should stay out of long spells of harsh sun. After a severe thunderstorm, check again for cracked or hanging branches.
Fruit trees and flowering trees have their own growth patterns, so the specialist asks about the flowering and fruiting season before proposing how much to cut. Watering and feeding to help a tree recover after pruning can be added to a regular garden maintenance schedule.
Can I prune a tree myself, and which areas do you cover?
You can prune low ornamental trees and shrubs yourself where you can reach from the ground, with sharp, clean secateurs. Once the job means climbing a ladder or using a chainsaw, or a branch could land on a roof, a car or a passer-by, leave it to a team with the equipment and a safety procedure. A large branch in free fall carries considerable weight, and most of the risk lies in bringing the branch down, not in making the cut.
UpClean prunes and fells trees regularly in the villa and townhouse areas of Thao Dien, Sala and Thu Thiem (An Khanh ward), Binh Trung ward, Cat Lai, Phu My Hung, Thanh My Tay ward, the former Districts 1, 3 and 4, the former Phu Nhuan and Nha Be commune. Surveys are also accepted in Districts 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12, Go Vap, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and the former District 9, with the appointment confirmed when you call or message. The city replaced its districts with wards on 1 July 2025, but most people still use the district names.
